AI Commons (“AI Commons,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) builds public-interest infrastructure for trustworthy artificial intelligence. This Privacy Policy applies to aicommons.org and other AI Commons websites or online services that link to it (together, the “Services”).
This policy does not apply to third-party websites, services, or repositories that have their own privacy notices. If you participate in a specific AI Commons program governed by a separate agreement or notice, that document may describe additional practices.
Information we collect
We collect information in three main ways:
- Information you provide. When you contact us, we receive your name, email address, message, and any other information you choose to include. If you apply to participate in a project, event, working group, or other program, we may also receive information about your organization, role, interests, and qualifications.
- Account and authentication information. If you create an account or sign in to an administrative area, our authentication provider processes identifiers such as your name, email address, account ID, organization membership, login status, and authentication or security events. We do not receive your third-party account password.
- Technical and usage information. Our systems and service providers may automatically process your IP address, browser and device type, operating system, referring page, pages requested, request date and time, approximate location derived from IP address, cookie or session identifiers, and security or diagnostic logs.
Please do not send sensitive personal information through a general contact form unless we specifically request it and explain why it is needed.
How we use information
We use personal information to:
- provide, operate, maintain, secure, and improve the Services;
- respond to questions and coordinate requested follow-up;
- administer accounts and verify access to restricted or administrative areas;
- organize programs, events, partnerships, and contribution pathways;
- understand performance, troubleshoot errors, prevent abuse, and protect the rights and safety of AI Commons and others;
- comply with law and establish, exercise, or defend legal claims; and
- send updates you asked to receive, where offered, with a way to unsubscribe from non-essential messages.
We do not use personal information from this website to train commercial artificial intelligence models.
Cookies and similar technologies
We and our service providers use cookies or similar technologies when they are needed for core functions such as authentication, session continuity, security, and user preferences. Your browser may let you block or delete cookies, but doing so can prevent sign-in or other features from working correctly.
We do not currently use information collected through the Services for cross-context behavioral advertising. If that practice changes, we will update this policy and provide any controls required by law.
How we disclose information
We may disclose personal information in the following circumstances:
- Service providers. Vendors may process information for hosting, database services, authentication, email delivery, security, diagnostics, and other operational support. They are permitted to use the information only to provide services to us or as allowed by law.
- Program administration. When needed to respond to you or administer an activity, we may share relevant information with AI Commons personnel, contractors, or project partners who are involved in that work.
- Legal and safety reasons. We may disclose information if we reasonably believe it is necessary to comply with law, legal process, or a valid government request; protect rights, safety, and security; or investigate fraud, abuse, or technical problems.
- Organizational changes. Information may be transferred as part of a merger, reorganization, financing, transfer of assets, or similar transaction, subject to appropriate protections.
- At your direction. We may disclose information when you ask us to or give us permission.
AI Commons does not sell personal information for money. We also do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Public content and third-party services
Information you choose to publish in a public repository, event page, comment, contribution, or other public forum can be seen, copied, and used by others. Before posting, make sure you have the right to share the information and are comfortable making it public.
The Services may link to or embed content from third parties. Those parties control their own privacy practices, and we encourage you to review their notices before providing information to them.
Legal bases for processing
Where applicable law requires a legal basis, we process personal information as needed to provide requested Services, based on our legitimate interests in operating and securing AI Commons, with your consent, or to comply with legal obligations. You may withdraw consent at any time, but doing so does not affect processing already completed.
Data retention
We keep personal information only for as long as reasonably needed for the purposes described here. The period depends on the type of information and why we hold it. For example, we generally retain correspondence while it is needed to respond and maintain appropriate organizational records, account information while an account remains active, and technical logs for limited operational and security periods. We may retain information longer when required by law, needed to resolve disputes, or stored in backups that are deleted on a routine cycle.
Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information. No online service, transmission method, or storage system is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. If you believe your interaction with us is no longer secure, please contact us promptly.
International processing
AI Commons and its service providers may process information in the United States and other countries whose data-protection laws may differ from those where you live. Where required, we use recognized safeguards for international transfers.
Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request access to, correction of, deletion of, or a portable copy of your personal information; to object to or restrict certain processing; or to withdraw consent. You may also have the right to appeal a decision or complain to a local data-protection authority.
To make a request, email hello@aicommons.org and include “Privacy Request” in the subject line. We may need to verify your identity and authority before acting on a request. Rights are subject to legal exceptions, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising an applicable privacy right.
Children’s privacy
The Services are intended for a general audience and are not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 through the Services. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, please contact us so we can review and, where appropriate, delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as the Services or our practices change. We will post the revised policy here and change the “Last updated” date. If a change materially affects how we use personal information, we will provide additional notice when required by law.
